Misdiagnosed: The TV series

Healthcare systems can be dangerous. Patients are too often mismanaged or misdiagnosed by their doctors, which can lead to lost treatment time, serious harm and even death.

With a lack of a centralized medical information system and little mandatory continued training for healthcare professionals, doctors’ information is often out of date or simply wrong. It can be a daunting task to expect them to stay abreast of specific illnesses and symptoms.

This video offers the true story of Maureen Thiel and her experience seeking advice for a lump in her breast.

Managing Pain

Accredited hospitals must provide satisfactory ways to manage a patient’s pain. It’s the law. In fact, on a pain scale of 1 to 10 (low to high), healthcare professionals need to help their patients achieve a level of no more than a 5 or 6. Dr. Cari Oliver, a Houston-based primary care provider for 25 years, informs patients that this is a duty that the hospital must follow. If a nurse tells a patient that “everything possible is being done,” and the patient is still experiencing high pain, Dr. Oliver recommends that the patient or patient’s advocate go up the command chain until they get the pain relief they need; first, by asking the nurse to call the doctor for more pain relief.  If the doctor refuses to help, then you ask for the Hospital Administer or anyone in Risk Management, who knows the law, and knows that the patient must be managed to an adequate pain level.
